The dredging of the River Niger was completed last year and its
channels opened for use, General Manager, Corporate Services, National
Inland Waterways Authority, Mr Tayo Fadile, has said.
Fadile said this on Wednesday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Lokoja.
It would recalled that the Federal Government awarded the N35bn dredging contract to six contractors in 2009.
The contracts, awarded in five slots, covered a distance of about 572 kilometres from Warri in Delta to Baro in Niger state.
Fadile said the arrangements had been completed for movement of goods and human traffic on the waterways.
He commended the federal government for the initiative, noting that when put to proper use, the channel would go a long way to boost water transportation in the country. (NAN) +Gizem Chinyere StarsOfNaija
